Nau mai, haere mai – are you a dynamic and experienced leader wanting to work at the cutting edge of te tiriti-based strategy and system policy advice? Our interim structure has served us well and we are now looking to consolidate and grow this exciting function on a permanent basis.
 
Ko wai mātou I Our Organisation 
Te Aka Whai Ora was established on 1 July 2022 and is an independent statutory entity for enabling Māori to shape health outcomes for Māori, and to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, acting as an agent for tino rangatiratanga, with joint accountabilities to the Crown and Māori.
Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
Reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive - System, Strategy and Policy, this is a unique opportunity to build and lead a team of strategy and system policy professionals. The important mahi you do will ensure that the health system works for whānau, iwi and Māori communities, and contributes to more equitable Hauora Māori outcomes. 
 
Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role
With our support you will;
  • Collaborate, participate in and influence policies and strategies across government that will drive system change
  • Champion the voices of whānau and communities and ensure that they are reflected in policy making at all levels
  • Help to ensure that central government agencies honour the duties and obligations set out in Te Tiriti o Waitangi during the policy development process and that these duties and obligations inform the outcomes that policy solutions are seeking to achieve
  • Work across Te Aka Whai Ora and agencies within the wider health system to lead and ensure strong and appropriate linkages with and between related mahi
  • Lead and support the pastoral and development needs of your area, ensuring the appropriate capacity and capability to contribute to the work programme and priorities of the Directorate.

Collaboration will be key, as you work across other parts of the organisation and partner with other agencies.

We are in build mode and we are looking for people who are willing to work in a fast-paced and fluid environment as we consolidate our role and functions.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
To be successful you will need:
  • A relevant tertiary or post graduate qualification and/or significant relevant strategy and system policy work experience
  • Strong understanding of tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori and the confidence to lead both internal and external hui for the purposes of giving voice to whānau and communities in setting the direction of Health Policy within Aotearoa
  • Understanding of Te Tiriti frameworks, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings and a commitment to meeting our obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to equitable health outcomes for Māori
  • Proven people leadership experience including the ability to successfully lead teams through change and achieve improved results while navigating a highly nuanced and complex system
  • Strong experience in influencing people, leading work programmes, change management and facilitation, coaching and mentoring
  • Strong stakeholder and relationship management skills and experience
  • Strong analytical and thought leadership skills and a strong understanding of machinery of government processes.

Our preference is for the successful candidate to be based in Wellington but consideration may be given to people with extensive policy and relevant experience outside of Wellington.
